"The Children of Lend Lease” seems to be the only novel, in which Aksyonov describes in detail his childhood, which he spent in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan Kazan in the Volga Region. Vasyly Aksyonov was born in Kazan, and there during the years of Stalin’s terror his parents were arrested and sent to a camp for political prisoners. And it was in Kazan that Vasily Aksyonov lived with his relatives and survived the Second World War.
